Flora and fauna take over Reffen
Reffen is in full bloom, having rolled up its sleeves – or rather, grown green fingers – with the launch of Reffen Wild. Over 100 tons of new soil have been planted, and between the shipping containers, flowers, shrubs, and lush green oases are springing up, where dragonflies and bumblebees buzz in rhythm with the sounds of summer.
But what’s the vision behind this budding urban nature project – and where is it heading? Gardener Katja Postma shares her insights.
What is the purpose of Reffen Wild?
The goal is to create a green oasis by the water, full of life, flora, and fauna. Plants aren’t just beautiful – they promote well-being and attract biodiversity. We want to show that even a raw, industrial space like Reffen can be transformed into a buzzing, wild, and vibrant haven. In just a year and a half, Reffen has begun to bloom, and we’re only just getting started.
What are you planting?
A mix of everything that can grow here – the wilder, the better! Reffen is already a living blend of the rough and the green. Climbing plants stretch up the sides of the shipping containers, and seeds are allowed to spread freely between them and out across the area.
Has Reffen Wild led to more than just greenery?
Absolutely! The increase in biodiversity is attracting insects and birds. I’ve spotted more dragonflies, bumblebees, honeybees, tits, and sparrows. We also treat the birds to proper bird feed, so they don’t have to settle for leftover fries and the like.
Are you growing edible plants?
Definitely! We’re already cultivating cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, parsley, mint, rosemary, thyme, apples, gooseberries, chillies, and strawberries. Guests at Reffen are more than welcome to pick and taste anything they like.
What’s the next project for Reffen Wild?
We’re about to start planting on the rooftop of Reffen Brewery – naturally, that space should be lush and green too.
Do you have a favourite plant at Reffen?
I have a soft spot for a red cabbage growing by Bar Sol. It gets bigger and wilder every day – it’s fascinating to watch.
Can people get involved with Reffen Wild?
Absolutely! You can take part by enjoying what we grow, asking questions, and joining our open workshops. For instance, at Reffen Summer Camp, we have a workshop where people can learn how to build insect hotels.
Once you take part, you quickly feel like you belong. It’s a truly special experience to be out here, now that the plants are shooting up from the ground, and you can walk among them, care for them, and simply enjoy their presence.
